I'm sure it was serious at the time, Janne, but I certainly got a belly full of laughs out of this report. You guys were indeed crazy doing what you did and putting your bodies through such torture. Sometimes ignorance is bliss and you have so much fun that you are not aware of the consequences. Obviously you guys weren't thinking of the seriousness of the situation rationally at the time. It's fun to look back on the crazy period of our lives and admit to the funny lunacy it obviously was, when in fact the consequences could have been dire. However, I liked the tone of your writing and the light hearted perspective you presented in the account of your trip, and it was a thoroughly entertaining and exciting read. Hell, it'd make a great movie! Thanks for an entertaining, adventuresome peek into another part of the world.
Janne, I enjoyed your trip report very much! It was pure fun to read this stories (knowing, that there will be a "happy end") described not immediately after the trip, but with the perspective of being 12 years or something older (maybe wiser?? ;)) Some of your passages reminded me on the adventures of Göran Kropp on his way to Everest in 1995/96 (he unfortunately died in 2002).
So - keep your adventurous soul and take care!
And it's always strange, how such "stupid" things tend to sound REALLY cool... ;))
Yes, Göran Kropp also had a wild streak, which is not so obvious in his books. As a "high profile" adventurer he had to think a bit about the message he sent out. Personally, I think some of the most interesting stuff is left out in the books.
If he had been with us on the bike trip, I'm pretty sure he had been in for all the stuff we did.
He died way too early and was always a fresh wind in the adventure scene.
RIP.
That was a great adventure. I wish I had the opportunity and fortitude to be an idiot. Your climbing is of a high standard and travelling in the Middle East is always risky. Thanks for taking us to another world.
Unfortunately, I was reading your TR in a public restroom. I'd kill to find out what was going throught the heads of the tomato-weilding Bedouins when they saw you guys.

Re: Quite an idiotWhen I think about those times I wonder what the hell we were doing. I still get a chill down my spine thinking about climbing that pit.

I can answer that one.
The look in their eyes said; What the...! Those stupid tourists.
