Toubkal Huts

The two huts are the ussually mid point for any attempt on Toubkal. Set at the foot of the south cwm, they are about 5 hours walk from Imlil. One is owned and run by the Club Alpin Francaise (Refuge du Toubkal), the other by a Moroccan 'accompanateur' from Imlil called Mohamed Imzilen.

There is sometimes mobile reception at the huts. Presently (May 06) Meditel seems give a more reliable signal than Maroc Telecom.

There is a lot of rubbish accumulating around these huts, please do your best to carry any waste out with you.

CAF Hut

In the Refuge du Toubkal accomodation is in communal rooms full of bunk beds. It can get very cramped and damp, especially in the winter. Downstairs there are two eating areas and a salon / lounge with a fireplace. Again this can get pretty squashed when the hut is full. Cooking is only allowed on the stoves provides, and there is a small fee charged for it's use. Food is provided on request, and at a cost! The toilets, showers and wash areas are all on the bottom floor (the basement). A hot shower will cost you extra.

Camping used to be possible near the older hut, however, the new one has covered that site. There are other places further away, best to ask the guardians of the huts where the best place is.

Gite Camping Les Mouflons

As with the CAF hut, accommodation is in communal rooms, however they are of a different class. They are much roomier, newer and less claustrophobic. There are bathrooms on both floors, and a lovely terrace looking back down the valley towards Oukaimeden. Downstairs it is also very roomy, which is fantastic in warmer weather and really hard work in the cold. There is a single chimney that smokes a lot. The stoves are available too, for a fee. Likewise they will cook you food on request. Hot showers are available at a surcharge.

The hut is run by a very pleasant chap called Aberahim Layihaoui, 00 212 63 763109, although as he at the hut most of the time it can be hard to contact him. The signal can be very weak.

Phone: 00 212 63 763713 / 00 212 61 213345. Email: afoud@wanadoo.net.ma

Costs (May 08): Board 80 dhs, Supper 50 dhs, Breakfast 25 dhs, Shower 10 dhs.

Camping is possible on the terraces below the hut, 20dhs a tent.
