2000 feet of gain in about a mile - this is not really a trail but a concatenation of wet slabby scrambles with an ocassional traverse for a brief respite. I was taken aback even after reading the descriptions.
Adams apple is worth a visit, lovely views, less crowded than the summit. If you stay on the flat bypass, the trail is just viewless mud - until you see the steep summit block just ahead at a break in the trees, which is a bit of a shock.

A Second Route to Mansfield
Having done the road/traverse route in 1985 as our first state highpoint, we decided to do a real climb the second time to the top. This is an enjoyable scramble, and is highly recommended to anyone looking for a fun day up Mansfield, rather than just tagging the summit.

fun trail
great trail--quite steep, but the slick, wet rocks make it extra challenging.

This Is A Steep Trail
Hard to believe it's only .9 miles to the Hell Brook Cutoff! Definitely worth while to go over the Adam's Apple. I thought that there were places ascending the Chin that were more exposed than this trail.

Up one, down another.
That was really steep! Great scrambles along the route. Actually, the entire route was one big one. Defiantly one of the more challenging routes. Ton's of fun, but came back down the Long trail and hiked the road to our car.

Slippery!
This was the trail where my HiTecs had tread separation reminiscent of Ford Explorers. The mica schist was particularly slippery, and everything was wet!

Chin Up...Pro's Down.
Ralph lead a nice early winter charge up the Hellbrook to the Chin and then down the "Pro"fanity trail. Awesome day!!!
This trail rules, just straight up! awesome scrambles for the east!I prefer to take a left at lake of the clouds and go over the adams apple, the views of the summit here are amazing. descend the long trail and hike the road back to the car, unless you like to hike steep downs!
Dude, we did the same exact thing. Went left onto Adam's apple, instead of going straight and turning up. We came down the long trail to and hiked up the road to our car. Weird,
