Route Climbed: Le Chapeu de Gendarme Date Climbed: 28 June 2002
Staying in the small out of season ski resort of Le Sauze, Le Chapeau was the tallest peak behind the village at some 2650m and was just begging to be climbed. So off i went one day up the mountain in stiffling heat. All day i only encountered three people all very friendly too. A plesant day out but i noticed excellent potential for hard rock routes on the north face and the ridge travesse between le Chapeau and the Brecs looks like a very exposed but pretty cool winter ascent. This is a fantastic area with plenty of potential and not any where near as busy as the Haute Alpes.

Provence is a great area for rock climbing with sometimes exceptional good rock. Here you can make very good training of rock climbing for alpine routes. You can prepare yourself very well by climbing rock grade V or so with big shoes .... it really makes fun!!
I climbed with Ivano many different routes, for example, in St. Jean, Sisteron, Digne le Bains, St. Giniez, where we made some first ascents of some funny, virgin peaks, which we called "Independent Republic of Ivano", "Rahel's Peak", "Hegel's Peak" .... Photos are following soon ....
