rainy day
After a good dousing just before noon, enjoyed a foggy but rain-free walk in the woods. Weather kept the crowds to a minimum, but there were a couple of big groups. Returned to car just before a big deluge.
Approach trails were a lovely stroll, the brook is wide enough to create a couple of small meadows full of flowers and birds.
Got a bit nervous when the trail approached the slide, thinking the trail would go up it, which would have been interesting in the wet and slippery conditions. Will have to return and try the slide some (dry) day.
I went up the north side and down the south, and was happy with that choice: lots of big stone and log steps on the north, which would have been jarring to descend.
Lots of maintenance evident on the loop trail, but a lot of it was ineffective: logs directly across the trail that made no provision for runoff, and are already being undermined. Some mud holes on the ridge could use new log bridges too.

Fell in creek on way up
A warm October day. It's a good thing it was warm too, since I slipped and fell into a creek on the way up.
Started hiking around 8:30 from the Kanc. Followed the typical "loop trail". 1:30 from the parking lot to the North peak. 25 minutes across to the South peak. 1:20 back to the parking lot. Done and driving home by 11:45 am. Very peaceful hike, the stream crossings are nice and there were great views south from the North peak.
hiked most of arrow slide - very wet trashed off due to too fecking slippery.
went back trail and went over the 2 bumps. very nice hike.

Hancock Loop via Hancock Notch and Ceder Brook Trails
Day hiked from the Kanc. Only saw two souls that seemed a bit lost (no gear and jeans). But it was a good day. Stream crossings were not a problem. Went up Hancock first then over to South Hancock. The climb up either is pretty steep.

Snowed all day, break trail both ways then shovel out car
Route Climbed: Northwest Slides Date Climbed: August 2000
Bushwhacked up from the east branch of the Pemi onto the big scree field just east of the northwest peak of Hancock. A somewhat arduous climb on the scree pops you out onto the east ridge where you bushwhack west to the the north summit and the trail. We continued on down to the south summit and down from there. A good alternative route - garaunteed solitude.
Route Climbed: Cedar Brook Trail to Hancock Loop Trail Date Climbed: September 11, 2005
I hiked these peaks as part of Flags on the 48. Cedar Brook Trail was very gradual and seemed to have every root from the forest on it (watch your feet!). There were 7 stream crossings that were no problem because it's been so dry lately. But I'd hate to attempt them in the spring or whenever there is a lot of water coming off the mountains. The Loop Trail has supposedly been improved immensely over the past year according to those that I was hiking with. A lot of steps have been added and the loose material has been contained so it's not so slippery. Both peaks are wooded, but they also have outlook points with some great views (especially on North). The trail between the two peaks in narrow near North peak, but widens a bit near South. The trail down from South decended a lot of elevation in a very short amount of time, so it was quite steep. I preferred going down it rather than up, but my hiking partners thought the opposite.
We had great weather for it and the trail heads were very accessible and well marked. Great hike, especially in the fall when the leaves are changing.

Loop trailBack in my trail running days (I wasn't very smart about that, back then). Didn't see a single person on a Saturday.
