Half Dome and Glacier Point

Half Dome and Glacier Point

Groan: Not another Half Dome image! And yet, here it is, as if the previous 400+ images on SP aren't enough. But, as I was framing up this image, after ascending 3,000 feet along Four Mile Trail to Glacier Point, I just knew that I'd seen this very scene before as a black and white (probably in an Ansel Adams' image). I've searched without success to find his previous image. However, Mjrangel did point out a similar William Henry Jackson photochrom image. All I can offer in defense of my posting this image is that I think it came out pretty good. The rapidly changing light made it difficult to select the specific image to upload from the half dozen I shot. The storm over Half Dome/Cloud's Rest would reach Glacier Point just as my son (Curtis) and I were beginning our descent. While we would see about thirty or so hikers going up the trail that morning, only the two of us (and a small group of trail workers about halfway up) would make the descent in the rain and thunder (presumably the rest took the bus from Glacier Point back down). It was a wonderful hike, and I have many memorable images to share of it. But, this is the best (since, this year, lower than normal snowfall meant no water was falling from Yosemite Falls for my picture-taking labor!). Imaged in Jul 2007.

Re: Half Dome...

Thanks, TJ311. Your shot is very nice, too! BTW: Do you ever hike in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge? It's not Yosemite, but it's very pretty in its own way, with lots of great history. --mark d.

Another Beauty!

I took a shot of glacier point near this spot on the trail and have used it as my desktop background for over a year. With better lighting (and a decent camera) it wouldn't be on page 4 :-)

Great Picture

I agree with Shanrickv. It never gets old looking at this beautiful scene. I went to the Ansel Adams exhibit at the Museum of Photographic Art the other day and was amazed at the beauty of Half Dome and Yosemite! I could look at pics from there all day! Thanks for the pic!

Re: Great Picture

Thanks for looking and commenting. It is indeed a beautiful place. And I love Ansel Adams work--have his Moon and Half Dome hanging in my living room. In fact, I'm debating printing this image up very large and hanging it above his work--so at least I am in his league in my own home. LOL. --mark d.

Hey Mark, yes we have seen many photos of Half Dome but, mostly from Glacier Point, this is a superb photo and from a different angle so, agree with the other postings on here, fantastic.

Thanks, Mills. Serendipity smiled on me to give me great light that day. It was a really nice hike from the valley floor. --mark d.

El Capitain !

A wonderful perspective on that famous site !

Imagine the wealth of such sites to be found on native soil ! Those that dare visit America certainly are cherished !

Excellent

This is a great photo. I seem to remember quite different weather when I last visited this park.
