Grizzly Peak beat down

GRIZZ.....I seem to have a strange relationship with this peak.  Twice I have climbed it solo and twice I have had my ass handed to me.  Last week I drove up to Loveland pass at 5:00 am to climb but the NWS wind forecast was off by about 100mph.  The day was salvaged with a day hike into Stevens gulch, which is the main trail head for some Colorado 14ers.  A few days later with a more favorable weather forecast, the chance came to go back.  The ascent was pretty straight forward, although it was very cold and my water froze, so I didn't spent more than a few minutes at the summit.  Another two hikers arrived and probably wanted to shelter from the wind behind the small rock shelter there.  Descending the steep rocky section below the summit was easy, even with ice in some places.  There is a saddle here before you must ascend again, one of three quite steep peaks that keep you at about 12,500+ of altitude before you can finally start to drop down toward the trail head.  With frozen water and a now severe case of mountain sickness, I had to force myself to climb and hike the 2 miles to lower altitude.  It was the first time I have experienced any kind of mountain sickness and it could not have been in a worse place.  The weird thing is, as you plod along feeling near death, half frozen and dehydrated, you can look down and see NORMAL people kicking it at A-Basin ski area.  Although beautiful, the mountains in Colorado are very unforgiving, and things can go south very quickly...be safe out there.
