Interesting you should say that. I was going to do it last summer but never got a chance. This year, I simply forgot about it! After perusing your page (yet again), I got thinking again about doing it. I don't know if I can squeeze it in this year, but am gonna try. If not, next year!
"Planning" might be too hopeful a word, although I have dreamed of climbing this mountain since I was a little girl and could see the Tetons in the far distance from my grandparents house in Idaho. I am moving to Utah in the next 12-15 months and expect to do/attempt it soon thereafter.
Alan- those images on my profile page are from my photos- an Adobe charcoal filter. Does a nice job- doesn't look as computerized as some of the Adobe effects. Take Care.
My friend and I are going to attempt the owen-spalding route the first week of July. I am new to climbing, he is very experienced, but all on the dry rock of yosemite. We are concerned about ice in the climb. Will this be too early in the season? Will we be setting protection in ice? Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.
This has been a heavy snow year for the Tetons. I would expect some degree of ice or snow on the Grand in early July. The west face cracks (including the OS) are in the shade and especially vulnerable to ice and snow pretty much all season long. Although there are only a couple of class 5 sections on the OS, snow or ice can make the class 3 or class 4 sections a whole new ball game. Take ice/snow gear and know how to use it. Good luck on your climb.
Thanks much! We are hoping to avoid a snow and ice climb, we are not entirely comfortable with that. I realize there is only so much we can do. Most of what I have read about the grand says that the owen spalding route it the easiest. Is there another route that you would recommend? Maybe less ice but rated slighly more difficult? Great page! by the way.
