Esmeralda County

Hi Dean: the population of Esmeralda County is low, but it is not the second lowest of the counties in the USA. Texas has a handful with smaller populations as does central Nebraska and possibly some rural counties in Montana and Idaho. In any case, you are correct in that the whole place seems abandoned.

I also wanted to mention that my ancestors on my mother's side were among the first to settle in Goldfield back in the early 1900s when it was a thriving city of many thousands of people. They bred like rabbits and many stayed on through the 1960s and "spreading" to nearby places as Gold Point, Luning, Mina and Tonopah. Chances are good an old-timer in that region is some distant relation of mine.

Re: Esmeralda County

Scott, that'll teach me for trusting wikipedia. : )
Any of your ancestors end up on that gallows they show off in Gold Point? Actually, I think it is only used on speeders who disobey the 15MPH speed limit. It seems like Gold Mountain should be on your radar screen since you have such a "connection". That area of Nevada has a lot of history and is one of the reasons why I love the "Silver" state.

Re: Esmeralda County

Dean, I think you might have meant that Esmeralda is #2 in low population DENSITY, which I believe is the case.
