Pickets in the Distance

On Sat 10/13 Eric, Ruth and I headed up to Goat Mt in the Mt Baker Wilderness. Plan was to try to bag both the East and West peaks of Goat Mt. TH was at 2500, with large parking areas on each side. Trail was nice, but didn't waste any time gaining elevation. We made good time working our way through dense forest through gullies filled with slide alder. Soon good views of Shuskan and Baker started appearing through the trees. We broke into the meadows and worked our way up to the ridge at 5400'. Views were spectacular!
At 5500 feet we started into continuous snow. I was postholing pretty good.
Snow at 5500

At the end of the ridge we had one last steep slope to the summit. Snow conditions were pretty rotten, with alternating postholing and downsloping slick dead grass. At 6000' I decided to turn around after posting to my thigh in places, and wet boots. Eric pushed on to near the top of the West peak, where wet cold feet turned him around. We traversed west over a gully and plunged down the easier snow slope (up to our thighs) and Eric got in a 500' glissade before reaching Ruth on the ridge. After ringing our our socks we headed back down and were back to the car in 1.5 hours.

Up to 40 inches of snow in places, snowshoes would have made the end of the trip more do able. East (higher) peak was not a realistic goal given the snow conditions.

Beautiful day, but the peaks will have to be bagged another day.
