Garns, Piney, Red Butte for Idaho County High Points (Teton & Madison)
I did not manage to write a post on these three (Garns, Piney, and Red) along with the other Idaho CoHPs I completed that trip, and I did not take notes, so I am left with what little I have from my memory at this point.
Minus a couple washouts, the road is drivable to all vehicles up to the trailhead. There were plenty of cattle along the road, so watch your speed. I encountered no vehicles at the trailhead, so any concerns of dodging motorcycles/ATVs were not an issue for me. However I wished I had brought my own mountain bike as it would have shortened the day considerably. It is not a whole lot of elevation gain or loss, just a lot of mileage.
There is a nice pit toilet at the trailhead, which was a little surprising. The area does see some use.
For the time and effort required on these three peaks, I did not find the views to be as rewarding as Baird the day prior. But it felt good to complete this cluster of Idaho's county high points.
Adam Helman's trip report will be sufficient preparation. I drove in from the south and exited to the north to return to Jackson. As mentioned in my trip report on Kelly Mountain, this trailhead is only a short drive up from the Kelly ski area.
Hiked up trail 219 to Elk Flat from the large trailhead pullout on road 235. A mellow walk to the top with good views of the Tetons from there. Very pleasant area despite all the motorized use.

Long Day
Came in from the Driggs side. Didn't see any other hikers, but several dirt bikers and mt bikers. Considering it was 15 miles roundtrip when all was said and done I see why the bikes are so popular. A lot of snow still in the area, and a lot of green...very picturesque.

Long hike from the west
I hiked from the west over Blacktail Pass. I tagged Piney Peak and Red Butte on the same hike. Long day.... Great views, beautiful area.

20 mile day
Adam Helman, an avid county highpointer and myself wanted to pick up two Idaho counties, Madison and Teton. In order to claim Teton county as a completion, one must hike to the top of both Garns and Piney Peak. We came in from the Kelly Canyon way (west) and proceeded to hike first to Garns via the ATV roads, taking a side trip over Coyote Ridge, and then hiked to the top of Piney (my favorite) and returned back to our vehicles by going over the top of Red Butte, the county highpoint for Madison county. A great but long day. 20 miles with at least 5000 feet of elevation gain. Beautiful area.

Many many times
I have been on Garns many many many times over the years. This was my backyard growing up. I lived in the Big holes all summer and winter as young adult. Have some incredible pics from there if i can find them! Piney Peak is a good one too!
Oh and to the author of this page, lay off the motorbikers, they arent bad.
I tried to bag this one with a friend (Jon Tanner) on cross-country skis in the late winter/early spring of 1985. He brought his girlfriend (now his wife, Lynda) who got sick and puked not too soon after we started up through the snow. We left her behind while we explored ahead and then we almost got TRAMPLED/STOMPED by a moose on a wind blown ridge. I was the dumb tourist with the camera when it charged us. Jon whacked it across the nose with his ski poles which bought us just enough time to get outa there!
