Magnifique display ...

Ejnar, where are the wildfires burning in Europe? Does southern Italy have a lot of fires, or are they confined to Spain?

We have a lot of moisture coming up from the south, leading to thunderstorms over Arizona.
You can tell we're having a good MONSOON
season by the vast number of ANTS thriving
on the ground and in the trees.

Can you please tell me - what does a FIRE do to the ant population? Does it bother them at all, being that most ants are NOMADIC and can flee from the scene of a wildfire ???

What's the condition of the forest in northern Italy? Is it in a healthy condition?
Just curious - seems it would be. Thank you!!

Re: Magnifique display ...

Thank you.
We have a lot of forest fires in France. Not so long ago there was one about half a mile from our house, but it was soon put out by the water bombers - hydroplanes that land on the local lake and scoop up 10 tons of water (it was just a small fire). Sometimes they can be very large, though and require evacuations and firefighting on the ground.

We don't seem to hear too much of fires in Italy, but I guess they must have them too, though not in the Alps where it rains too much.

Most ants will dig down to the groundwater in making their nests, and perhaps can evacuate at least some so deep that the fire cannot hurt them, I guess (I will ask my daughter, who works with ants at CUNY). If the queen dies, however, the whole nest will disintegrate, as their will be no new ants.

Mood and Scale...!

Hi there again,
That is one really moody picture and the way its scaled against the foreground is wonderful. A very nice picture like all of yours are.
David.

Re: Mood and Scale...!

Thank you for the kind comment. Glad you liked it, the weather was quite typical for our Dolomite visit this year, but sometimes a blue sky is not needed.

Re: Great shot!

Thank you! It's funny, I used this photo on a birthday E-mail yesterday, and was surprised to see there was a comment on it today!
