Flood of 16 May 2005

This was the big flood of 2005. While the 1997 Flood is what everyone talks about, the truth is that almost every May and/or very early June, this waterfall especially often floods. Its drainage area is very small, extending only as far as Mt Hoffman, and the elevation of its drainage only reaches 10,000 ft. Thus as soon as spring arrives, the snow at this lower elevation melts, bringing massive amounts of water down these falls, long before the high areas above 13,000 ft melt, which send the floods down the Merced river itself.
