Seems like hiking to Bishop pass and going over Winchell Col would be a shorter approach. Certainly starts at a much higher elevation than Glacier Lodge. Could do as a single day or camp at Bishop Pass or Dusy Basin. From reading the descent description and viewing a photo on the West Arete route page, seems like there could be a few 5th class moves getting to the col, though.
