of not from

Actually, I'm pretty sure this is a view of the adjacent peak Kandlbinder, not a shot taken from. Impressive though, I'd love to try to make it there one day (chaparral willing).

Re: of not from

Right, the pic is from the summit of Ventana Double Cone, looking towards Kandlbinder. Sorry for the confusing caption.

Congrats on getting up there. How was the chaparral ? Every time I go up there I end up pruning lots of it back, but it grows fast ... I read though at ventanawild.org that some work was done on that trail recently.

From what I've heard, the best way to Kandlbinder these days is not from the VDC trail, but up from Jackson Camp / Little Sur river following a ridge. Haven't tried it myself though - folks to talk to would be Bob Burd and Matthew Holliman.

Re: of not from

Yes, I do hear coming up from the Little Sur drainage is the way to go. I tried to bushwhack the ridge last week and damn that was some thick chaparral. I turned around after 2 hours and ~200 yards.

Re: of not from

I've heard the brush between VDC and Kandlbinder is pretty ugly ... the trail shown on the USGS map seems to have overgrown.

When I mentioned chaparral, I meant on the VDC trail - in past years I've had to crawl through it at times (sometimes sawing & clipping). Sounds like it's in pretty good shape these days though, eh ?
