NE Shoulder Route  Sucess!

Hiked up from the Ear Mountain WMA trailhead. Plenty of annoying scree slogging above the treeline, but this is a really interesting and worthwhile hike notwithstanding. Unique in that you start in the eastern foothills and ascend to a peak right on the edge of the Front. Great views and an interesting route. A unique hike worth doing for anyone.

Great Hike, Wicked Scree.

Great hike. That summit access couloir has nasty, nasty scree.

West side gully via NE ridge from Ear Mountain WMA  Sucess!

This mountain is very pleasing to the eyes and has a very interesting route. It may be one of my favorites now. There is a lot of loose scree which is not very enjoyable, but it is worth it! When I got around the fun little ledge system which connects the NE ridge to the west face and followed the goat trails south, I ran into a group of 4 from Choteau just starting in on the steep, very loose gully. They had gotten permission from a private landowner to make a shorter route from Willow Creek up the west face. One of the climbers was 87 year old Bob, climbing Ear Mountain for the first time after thinking about it for years (decades?)! Well, Bob made it to the top - way to go Bob!! What an accomplishment on this not-so-easy mountain! Hope I'll be able to do the same at that age! My dogs didn't really enjoy the gully too much - those loose rocks make doggy feet sore! - but the summit plateau is very awesome, perched right there on the edge of the Great Plains! (The only downfall was the swarms of flying ants that were driving everyone nuts - whats up with that?)

ear mountain  Sucess!

hot day during the drought of 2007. fool creek fire began as a whisper of smoke and finished the day looking like the cloud from an A-bomb. Great day never the less. From wma parking lot up the ridges over the goat trails to the chute. Descended to the south on goat trails until finally coming out on a certain ranch off beeleview road

NE Shoulder to west couloir  Sucess!

With Moni on a beautiful day that ended with a few thunderstorms.

Approached from the WMA parking area and climbed over the NE Shoulder to the west side and up the only non-technical couloir.
