I'm pretty sure you guys hiked right past KirkT and I on your way up the road. We were sleeping on the bed of his truck. Good job. It was a spectacular day.
It was a pretty warm night, and with a 20 degree bag I was comfortable. My biggest problem was the unusual amount of condensation all over his truck. And luckily there was no bugs.
I was going to climb from the western side (Cottonwood Lake Trailhead to Broken Hand Pass) on the 21st, but my climbing partners decided not to drive out from Alabama... it was a sad day indeed, since I had been looking forward to this summit for some time, but I settled with a long loop hike with my Dad and brother in the San Juans.
Thanks for the comment tacoturner... The San Juans are nice right now. Climbing the Needle from the Cottonwood Lake TH is a great idea. It's very scenic. I plan to use that when I attempt the traverse.
