Great TR guys!!!!

And a great outing!! Your Cirque experiences sounded very similar to ours a year ago. We too set out with the idea of staying there for 6 or 7 days (and doing a WHOLE lotta climbs) but the rain got to us and we got out of there after like 4 days or so :)

Our "grade II" climb of Warbonnet got us back to our tent long after dark and totally soaked from the downpour :)

Maybe you could post the Sundance Pinnacle - either as a route on the Warbonnet page or as a separate mountain? Whatever you guys think is best. It's a cool-looking formation.

Glad to hear that getting zapped on Pingora did not prove too serious. Scary place to be in an e-storm!

Cheers,

radek

Really good stuff, Alois! I'd love to check out the Warbonnet someday. Not to get off topic here but I ran into "Joe" out by the Stonehouse. Deb and I spotted a few of your lines on Lone Pine Peak's south face as we headed up to Langley this weekend! Impressive work, Old Man! ; )

Radek:

The topos I had with me included the Warbonnet 5.7 route of your making, we finally decided not to risk the route because the thunderstorms were so strong and frequent. I have never been so wrong about mountain weather before; It was totally unpredictable.

Re. the Pinnacle, I will do that. I'm very reluctant to start bad mountain page so I will try to add it to the Warbonnet.

BTW, we had much better weather later in the month in the Titcomb Basin, temperatures were much cooler then, and I almost think that late August and early September might be better time for the Winds. What do you think?

Anyway, glad Pen and I could share our trip with people who love the place and know what's it like.

Thanks bro,

Alois..

Hi Dave:

The Warbonnet 5.7 right line looks really great. We camped just below the peak so I had time to study it. It looks like a very good route. We will go back there again, Pen is absolutely crazy about the Winds, so I will have to go too, I guess. The Warrior 1 Beckey-Rupley line looks great too.

Re. Lone Pine, Joe was there picking up some gear and scouting another line, Miguel, Joe and I hope to try in the winter.

Great TR!

Alois, Nurse Ratchet and I must have only missed you guys by a week or two. Similar goals, but ours was Elephant's Perch rather than Gannet Peak.

Sounds like it's been a good year for the senile.

Alois,

Very happy/flattered to hear that some of that chickenscratch I posted came along with you guys :) I look forward to seeing a page for the Pinnacle.

As for the weather, you may very well be right. Our first trip into the Cirque was very early August 2004. NASTY weather. We got hosed EVERY day there (were there 4 or 5 days total) - the storms would hit us anytime from about 2pm to about 5 pm and last into the night. Got sick of it and went for Devil's Tower on day 4 or 5 :)

This year, we were there for 3 days and had much better weather. It sprinkled on us just a tiny bit as we were coming off Pingora but that's about it. Although, we spoke to a couple folks who were hiking out who told us that the weather had been totally miserable just a day or two before our arrival (incl. some snow flurries). I think it's just a gamble. I also recall that during our Gannett attempt few years earlier we had generally good weather for 3 or 4 days - difference in location??

The Beckey-Rupley line on Warrior 1 - is that the IV 5.9 line mentioned by Kelsey (I don't have the book with me)? If so, that thing looks great if committing given the weather there :)

Take care an thanks for a great TR!

Thanks Brutus. Yes good year for you as well. How was the Elephant's Perch? Which route? How was the weather, presume you were there early September.

Radek: Yes, the Warrior one is the Grade IV, 5.9 line. Looks commiting with some steep climbing, but what a goal to have!

I read somewhere here on SP of your amazing speed run up the Pingora 5.8 line. What an inspirational write-up and what good style to do it in! Congrats.

Regarding the weather, we all might have to conclude that repeated trips and speed might be the only way to approach this area with.

Penelope and I will return, we hope to drive to Pinedale in February to ski at White Pine Ski Area outside the town.

We think of scheduling another trip there in summer. Pen would like to see the Shadow Lake area on the other side of the Cirque. .

Penelope thanks you guys for your kind comments, she wrote the report, I just get in a way of the accolades.

Ha! a friend thought this sounded familiar and linked me up... I'm Aaron, the guy with the tattered tent that you met. Congrats on the big day! I'll be back next year for more Wind River Fun! As it went, I returned to Colorado to lick my wounds, and climbed 16 peaks over the following 6 days. Not bad, but the lure of Gannet still beckons... Fortunately, we did reach the summit of Helen and UN 12,205' while we were in the Titcolm Basin. Good job! once again.

Hi Aaron: Nice to hear from you. Yes, Gannett is the price, even if the effort to get it is a bit out of norm. The North Face is very good route late in the season, when the slopes get icy. Hope you and your friend can return and climb Gannett. Cheers and good climbing, Alois.

PS. This SP site makes a really big wide world somewhat small, doesn't it? Thanks for posting your message, it made our day.

Hi Arthur

As a matter of fact, we have 580 of them on a CD set up as a slide show. Unfortunately, the SP format does not allow for submitting many pictures. We only submitted several on both Gannett and Cirque of the Towers pages. When we wrote the TR, we didn't know how to insert the pictures, actually we still don't. The article in it's original form (before SP) had about 10-12 photos with it. Anyway, we are happy you liked the TR, we had a blast there, maybe you can make it there one of these days, if you didn't already. Cheers, Alois.
