Mosquito Range, Colorado-- the wind, of course, has shaped the tree. This species can live for thousands of years, although the specimens in Colorado and Utah are not nearly as old as some of those in Nevada and California, where one tree is over 5000 years old. July 2004

Thanks, Sarah. It's a very nice page you out together for Windy Ridge and a nice source of information for it. I very much enjoyed my visit there back in 2004 when I went to do the Decalibron.

If you haven't been already, you should try to check out the bristlecones in Nevada's Great Basin NP or in California's White Mountains. They are older there, and for some reason, the older they are, the more gnarled and polished they get. Some look more like rock sculptures than trees, and the bark is smooth to the touch.
