Lacing etc.

Hi Chris,

Good tips bourne out by my 40+years of mountaineering/hiking.
However, you mention a lot about lacing systems but don't illustrate this with examples. I feel a few photos of different systems might add to your thesis.

cheers Johnnie

Lacing etc.

Johnnie -- Thanks for the feedback! I agree wholeheartedly that some lacing examples and illustrations would be helpful. I have said to myself many times that I should sit down and create a separate article or section on lacing. It simply has never risen to the top of the priority list. A web search on "lacing techniques" brings up some good websites though.

Superfeet

Great article, thanks for taking the time to post!
Just want to say I concur with you with regards to Superfeet insoles. I use them and it's true that they feel like they press too far rearward on your arch, but that sensation goes away after you get used to them. I use them in my running shoes as well.

Cheers,

Ruben

Space?

I've heard that with your boots just touching the end of the boot, that you should be able to fit a finger between your heel and the the back of the boot, is that a valid length test?

Re: Space?

It's not necessarily invalid, but it doesn't really give you enough information to assess the overall fit. There are likely boot/foot/sock combinations that wouldn't pass that test that do, in fact, produce a great fit. And there are certainly many combinations that _would_ pass that crude test that are _not_ a good fit.

Right on

I have been through the Phil Oren System and you just took an eight hour class and summerized it in about ten minutes. If only my customers would read this, they might have a clue other than, " Dude, I can never wear that color."

Great idea!

Thanks for the post! I usually order custom hiking boots because it's hard to find a fit for my wide flat feet.
