I did not expect a wonderful land of mesas in western OK, but after hitting this on my way back to CO from the south, I was very glad I discovered the beauty of OK.

January 2011
Did this in perfect weather in January 2011. Saw a large fox walking along the trail near the mile 2 bench! Relatively flat the whole way except around the mile 3 bench.

White Mesa
Did this on my annual drive to Indy for Xmas. The ground conditions and my choice of clothing made it more interesting. My schedule didn't allow for much margin of error (I'd get back to the car as it was starting to get dark), so I didn't take time to change into my hiking clothes. Instead, wore cotton pretty much head to toe - plus mesh summer trail shoes. So the 4" to 6" of snow made for a cold walk. The road was plowed, but the parking lot wasn't, so I took a couple of minutes to shovel a little parking spot at the side of the road beforehand. 1:40 up and 1:25 down. Coming from Boise City, there were plenty of signs that said Black Mesa State Park - but they pointed to the left. Stay on the road to Kenton until you see the sign for Black Mesa NATURE PRESERVE.

Black Mesa (H.P. #25)
An excellent day - clear skies and 60-70 deg. My wife and I followed the old road up to the H.P. at a leisurely pace in 1 hr. 40 min. over the stated 4.2 miles. We noted that several of the wooden route/mileage signs were missing from their posts. Nice benches at M.P. 1, 2, 3, and at the H.P. Bench at M.P. 3 affords a great view to the NW! Nice H.P. monument! We wondered how they got it up there...the road is impassible now. The register box is full of loose notes, and the books are full. Does anyone manage the register?
I hiked Black Mesa right before sunset. I started on the trail at 5:20 and made it to the summit about an hour later. It was dark by the time I made it back to the parking lot. Not much of a view but glad I did it.
A fun hike with 2 neighbor dudes from Minnesoter. Stepped on several horned toads, but didn't lick them. Saw two other hikers. Very unique area.

Long drive but we made it.
It was hot but we busted out the hike in no time. Had to get down fast to dodge a storm rolling in during the afternoon. Got a flat tire on the drive out. no Fun! Although the country side here is very beautiful!
Unfortunately started the trek at 4:30 pm. It must have been 100 degrees. I was praying for rain. But it was awesome.

Dusk on the Mesa
Drove here from Mount Magazine, after a quick stop in Oklahoma City. Made it up in about 90minutes. As I reached the marker the sun began to below the surrounding mesa's and I hurried down, getting to my truck right as it got dark. The sunset turned the normally black looking mesas into a dark red color. Drove to Black Mesa state park and camped there for the night.

Tagged this while in the area. Nice area really, would like to explore more, some day. 4.1 mi in, if they would straighten out the trail, you could save a mile each way. "summitted" with my dog Gypsy!

Drove from Wheeler Peak after a failed summit attempt (zero visibility and hurricane force winds) and stayed the night at Black Mesa St Pk. The temperature was around freezing when I started hiking and once on the mesa the wind really kicked up. The landscape on the hike is quite cool; I'd never seen cacti like that before. And what's with the colorful old west town?

Easy Highpoint
A nice easy walk up to Oklahoma's state highpoint. It was sunny and a little warm. Lot's of nice flowers along the way.
Absolutely loved the drive between Boise City and Kenton. Pretty hike up to Black Mesa. Haven't done much hiking at all in this dry of an area but I liked the change in scenery. On my way down saw a fellow Wisconsinite, Holsti97, who is closing in on finishing the 50 states. Enjoyed supper at the Kenton Merc before heading on to attempt Wheeler Peak (ultimately unsuccessful due to snow & ice).
