Fun hike  Sucess!

I hiked this peak with my mother, who is 74 years old. We parked early since we were driving a 2wd vehicle, so we added a little mileage, but it was barely 5 miles r/t anyway. The lower road is easy to walk, the upper road is rough and loose in places. Not sure how people in jeeps or ATVs get past one section where a rock outcrop leaves only about 5 feet of width in the road with no shoulder. For hiking, it's easy. Views were excellent, esp. of nearby Potosi. First to sign in since November 2015. Is this peak really that far off of Las Vegas hikers' radar?

Great views  Sucess!

Hiked up from the fork that is rec'd by redsplashman. About 8/10th of a mile and 850' of elevation gain. Saw a bighorn on the way in and about 6 deer, one with a good rack. Enjoyed the views from the top but didn't go over to Bird peak as my wife was waiting for me down at the truck.

High Point  Sucess!

Gained the Bird Springs High Point with Barry and Abby. Planned to go over to Bird Peak, but Abby had some sort of spasms that had us greatly worried. She was ok by the time we got down, so maybe she was bit or stuck by something not terribly lethal. Very nice views and nice desolate location. Saw 11 does with one buck during the ascent.

Two Birds  Sucess!

I followed the trail up to Bird Spring Range HP and then traversed the ridge over to Bird Peak and back. There was a fresh dusting of snow in the mountains from a recent storm.

Bird Spring hp - yes, Bird BM - no  Sucess!

Jeeped almost all the way to the top with a longtime friend, Earl Alger who is 78 years old. The wind was blowing pretty hard on top so I didn't talk Earl into traversing over to Bird Peak.

A loop  Sucess!

Starting at the parking area suggested on the route page, I headed up the old road, soon reaching the summit of Bird Spring Range Highpoint. Although the mountain was mediocre, the views from the top were surprisingly terrific.

Dropping down, I made the quick traverse over to Bird Peak, arriving 25 minutes after I'd left the vehicle. Signed the register and headed down.

Rather than retrace my steps, I dropped down into a brushy drainage that led from just below Bird Peak's summit directly to my vehicle. I arrived 58 minutes after starting out.
