Re: Africa! Thanks, Doug! Didn't really get that good of a view of the Diamond Couloir while walking past the upper portion of it @ the Gate o' the Mists (drops down quite steeply), & our approach & descent routes were both on the other side. Nice shot of you on Logan on your profile, BTW. Are you still planning on attempting the Cassin this spring/fall?

Re: Africa! Thanks, dug! I posted this picture of a view down the couloir from Gate of Mists, but the couloir proper was not visible because of the steepness.

ForeshorteningA note to aspirant Mt Kenya climbers: Batian looks a lot steeper and more intimidating in this view from Nelion than it really is in practice. Profile views of the Gates of Mist (e.g. here or here) show a truer picture.

Re: ForeshorteningHowever, considering the short distance between Nelion & Batian (~150m, if that, and only 50m or so descent to the notch between the 2), the fact that at least 3 hrs should be allocated to getting to Batian & back from Nelion attests to the fact that it's somewhat more than a scramble as well ;-)

ForeshorteningMore than a scramble? Definitely a technical climb then and not possible to go up without gear?

Re: ForeshorteningWell, it's all relative... Let's just say that if you've gotten that far (to see Batian from Nelion), that you should have the requisite skills (& necessary equipment) to complete the climb :) From Nelion to Batian via Gate of the Mists involves (usually) a full rope-length rappel, steep drop-offs with incredible exposure, exposed & delicate snow climbing, & some moderate rock climbing.
