Congradulations! I have a great picture looking towards Mercedario on 'summit day' on Aconcagua (1995), and always wondered what the area around Mercedario was like. Too bad you did not have a clear day on the summit (but at least the weather was mild and all got down safely).
This was a fantastic achievement and I really enjoyed reading about it.
Your TR had special meaning for me since I was on Aconcagua at the same time in 2011 and I spent a lot of time looking across at Mercedario between 16th - 19th February, although it wasn't until I returned that I found out what the huge bulk on the horizon actually was.
Must say that when I eventually got round to looking Mercedario and Ramada up, it made me really want to go there and I did research them for a while... but sadly I don't think I will, unless a lottery win enables me to retire before I become to decrepit to climb such big mountains again.
I wrote up my Aconcagua experience and there are a few photos of Mercedario taken on 16th and 17th - when I made my summit climb - do have a look on http://www.summitpost.org/aconcagua-2011-solo-via-the-polaco-guanaco-normalo-route/709034
I remember well the storm you describe - it killed 3 on Aconcagua.
It is a shame the clouds came in and stopped you taking a photo of Aconcagua on your summit day! That day, just before leaving my high camp to descend I looked across over a sea of cloud and your summit was clear early on. But as I descended the clouds certainly did come in and I was worried about getting hit by another storm!
Congratulations again and thanks for sharing your experiences
As I read your prose I silently wondered if I would have the stamina to keep moving as you and Marion did. I suppose with some Austrian taffy and other goodies to munch on, yes, I would! What a wonderful experience, I'm so glad you had made it up and down safely. Great story, great pictures. 10/10
