Overview

Raetikon (Rätikon) is situated on the Borders of the three Countries Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. The main ridge is about 40 km long and lies between Austria and Switzerland, the highest Peak is the rocky Schesaplana, 2965 m, which arises out of a glaciated plateau, called the ‘Roof of Raetikon’ („Dach des Rätikons“). The Glacier is named Brandner Gletscher, due to the small Walser-Village Brand which lies in Austria north and beneath the Schesaplana-Ridge in Brandner Valley (Brandnertal), one of the main valleys of the Area. Raetikon is mainly formed of Limestone. „Sulzfluhkalk“ is sedimented in Trias and Jura and forms solid and steep, often vertical Walls, 500-600 metres high, especially at the southside of the main ridge, a pure pleasure for climbers.

The main ridge consists (from West to East) of the massives Kirchlispitzen, Drusenfluh (with Drei Türme), Sulzfluh und Weissplatte.

The main ridge ends with Madrisa Massive in the East.

Among other important massives is Zimba, 2643 m, known as the ‘Matterhorn of Voralberg’, („Matterhorn Voralbergs“), due to its sharp characteristic silhouette, recognized from far away and almost all summits of Voralberg.
