Introduction

The forts of Genoa are a set of military fortifications dating back to different eras, which the Republic of Genoa built to defend the urban territory of the Ligurian capital over the course of its history.
The building projects were also taken up and used in the Napoleonic era, the Risorgimento and during the first and second world wars.
This defensive system marks the events of a large part of the city's history, almost punctuating the complex theory of the seven city walls that have overlapped over time. Among these, the seventeenth-century walls that still surround the heights that form the first buttress of the neighboring Ligurian Apennines and represent the longest walls in Europe and the second in the world, after the great Chinese wall.
