Alternate route

Rather than follow the poled route (and the crowds) up Cradle Mountain, where the poles head off to the right, carry on straight up this gully to Smithies Peak. Thereafter traverse across to the main summit on or below the ridge crest with some Class 3 and exposure. Rejoin the poled route 5 minutes before the main summit. Feb 15, 2006.
