I'm now official!

Turned 60 today and feel great! My wonderful husband is fixing me dinner tonight and baking me his special birthday cake. We are planning a trip to Seattle and Mt. Rainier this summer to celebrate my 60th and his retirement. I am so excited since it will be our first time to Washington state.

SummitPost is a great place for welcoming those of us with life "experience".

Just found this album

In training for Medusa and Ojos del Salado from the Argentine side in January 2010, then maybe on to Aconcagua depending on how Ojos goes.

Ambition over 65

Step by step getting back into it, starting at 65 after a ~40 year layoff. Steep snow last June, first major Teton peaks two and three years ago, basic vertical ice on Iowa silos and not quite vert. on waterfalls. Still chicken-hearted. Back to the 'Gunks last spring, some sturdy hiking in NH last five years, summer and winter conditions. Are these light feints toward further degrees of ambition yet to be realized? Inspiration from Jack Taylor (Taylor/Germer "Jackie" at the 'Gunks) who has near a decade on me, as I push toward 70 and he continues climbing with the precision he showed instructing in my first year of mid-late 1950s.

oh good gawd,

I got a little less than two freaking years to go before, hopefully making the list. Normally, I have a semblance of equanimity about the age deal but this evening I am haunted by visions of being relegated to walking loops around a shopping mall dressed in a powder blue leisure suit and white velcro walking shoes. (shudder). Aside from that flash of horror, I will take a good read of this till-now undiscovered album.

Dad

Hey Dean-
Great album and idea!
Although he's not a SP member, I added a picture of my Dad at 77 on top of Blackman Peak.

Re: Dad

Glad to see you add your dad. He's only 8 years older than me so he isn't that old yet.

Re: You're right!

Being ageless is the key. Thanks for your comments as we are both in agreement with this aspect of life. : )

Posted a picture of my mother here

Dean,

I finally got brave enough to post a pic of my mother, the woman who showed me how to get 'r done in the mountains, on your 60 and Better album.

If she sends you death threats for this action of mine, I'll run interference...

Re: Posted a picture of my mother here

She should realize how proud you are of her. Kudos for your action. I'm only 69 (pre world war 2 by a year) and I hope my kids are proud of me for still being active in hiking/climbing so likewise, she should be happy that you do care.

How do you deal with injuries?

I really enjoyed this album. I agree that staying young and fit is mostly mental, but how do you deal with the normal wear and tear on your joints? Thanks!

Re: How do you deal with injuries?

Thanks for your comments about the album. I for one, actually don't do anything special to minimize wear and tear. Keeping fit is one of the keys and I start the backpacking season with lighter loads and work my way up.

Re: Just read this

Hey Robbie, glad you liked this. Aging kinda sucks but what choice do you have about that aspect of life anyway, so yes, the key is to keep getting out and doing stuff. Thank you.

great album

Thanks Dean, a really great album. I decided still to wait a few years before adding my photos, but added a few photos of my friends in the ripe age. :)
